Standard empirical tables are used to calculate the heat losses from straight pipe work of different diameters at varying operating temperatures. The new study shows that these tables may give significantly consersative savings results when applied to awkward valves, flanges, strainers, air & dirt separators, PHEx, control valves and similar.

Annual heat losses and savings can be calculated when operating hours, kWh fuel costs and boiler house temperatures are factored in to the equation and paybacks of 10 – 14 months are generally expected on 24/7/365 heated buildings. The recent study has shown that this may now be reduced by a factor of 3 i.e. giving paybacks in the range of 3 – 5 months.
